With high-end ophthalmic lenses, Bin Shyh establishes itself as "Mercedes-Benz" in Taiwan's optometry industry

Bin Shyh Enterprise Co. was established in 1988. While starting his own business, Bin Shyh chairman Wang Jin-he decided to name his company “Bin Shyh.”

“Bin Shyh” and the German auto giant “Mercedes-Benz” are homonyms. Wang’s decision means that he wanted to pay tribute to this famous, long-established brand, and at the same time show his determination to make Bin Shyh a leading manufacturer in Taiwan’s optometry industry.

Wang led the Bin Shyh team to start from the manufacturing of ophthalmic lenses. The company introduced a number of all-electric servomechanism injection machines from Japan, combined the special strengthening process, and used precision testing equipment to ensure high-quality and reliable products. Such approaches prove that the coefficient of friction of the lens surface, developed by Bin Shyh, is higher than that of common lenses.

In 2004, Bin Shyh was a contract maker of an ophthalmic lens manufacturer in South Korea, but faced pressure from that Korean manufacturer who could not make payments and might go out of business.

With the ambition of creating his own brand, Wang decided to take over the sunglasses patent from that Korean manufacturer. Integrating the meaning of light source and multi-function, he dubbed the self-owned brand as “Photoply.” Since then, the Bin Shyh chairman has made his way to the self-brand management.

At present, Bin Shyh’s main products include PMMA (Polymethylmethacrylate, also known as acrylic or acrylic glass), aspheric presbyopic lenses, polycarbonate (PC) sunglasses (commonly known as scratch-resistant lenses), photochromic lenses that can adjust the color and tint of the lenses in 7 seconds as light conditions change, toric lenses, and nano-film discoloration corrective lenses.

Bin Shyh can provide a series of tailor-made services and develop a wide variety of ophthalmic lenses in different colors and uses. In an effort to enhance the added value of ophthalmic lenses and the advantages of product differentiation, the company positions its products at the high-end. Its main customers come from Japan, Brazil, South Korea, the U.S., the U.K. Italy and Hong Kong.

Photoply ophthalmic lenses are popular among a number of well-known ophthalmic lens manufacturers from Taiwan and abroad. But Wang says that they can’t afford to become complacent about any of their products. Thus, Bin Shyh still continues to develop new technologies.

Wang, who knows how to leverage the resources of industry-academia cooperation, has been actively involved in a wide variety of government and industrial development projects. Bin Shyh worked with the Electronic and Optoelectronic System Research Laboratories, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), to develop aspheric hyperopia (farsightedness) lenses. In 2013, the company took part in the Conventional Industry Technology Development (CITD), supported by the Industrial Development Bureau, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, to develop a series of multi-purpose goggles and offer health care services.

In addition to the research and development of multi-functional anti-blue light, anti-glare, night vision, anti-infrared, anti-ultraviolet lenses, Bin Shyh also cooperated with Chung Hwa University of Medical Technology to establish an assessment mechanism of eye health conditions. Based on the multi-functional sunglasses, this assessment mechanism integrates the professional development of precision optical lenses into the product design of a pair of glasses in a bid to provide consumers with a more extensive range of eye care programs.

With the rapid changes in the ophthalmic lens market, Wang takes full advantage of e-commerce platforms to promote their own products. In recent years, Bin Shyh has succeeded in developing a number of new clients in South Korea, Brazil, Dubai and Turkey through online marketing channels. It is obvious that B2B e-commerce sites can help to bring huge growth momentum.
